Plan assistance to states raised by about 10 per cent

Central plan assistance to states and Union territories in the 1999-2000 Union Budget has been placed at Rs 330 billion as against Rs 301.08 billion, an increase of around 10 per cent.

Presenting the Budget in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said that assistance for basic minimum services and slum development schemes has been enhanced from Rs 36.84 billion to Rs 40.43 billion.

Sinha said the fiscal deficit in the current financial year is estimated at 897.13 billion, after taking into account receipts of Rs 100 billion from disvestment of equity in public sector enterprises.
