Pivotals slip after early gains; mixed trend marks market; Sensex closes five points up, 3313.40

Pivotals lost their intra-day gains following profit-taking by operators at the heavy-weighted counters at the Bombay Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the mixed trend, the 30-scrip BSE Sensex opened higher at 3329.81, touched the day's high of 3360.19, but fell sharply to touch a low of 3298.42 points on profit-taking and selling pressure by operators in blue-chip companies.

The Sensex finally ended at 3313.40 points, showing a marginal gain of 5.81 points from the previous close of 3307.49 points.

According to leading BSE brokers, petroleum stocks like BPCL and HPCL were in the limelight. Pharmaceutical scrips like Glaxo, German Remedies, and Novartis were the few other gainers.

The infotech stocks showed marginal movement, they said.

The broad-based BSE-100 index rose 3.36 points to 1457.68 as against the previous close of 1454.32 points.

The BSE-200 and the Dollex indices advanced 1.18 and 0.40 points to 336.77 and 132.05 points from the previous close of 335.59 and 131.85 points, respectively.

Total turnover on the BOLT system increased marginally at Rs 15.79 billion compared to yesterday's turnover of Rs 15.68 billion.

Tobacco giant ITC stood first in the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 2.23 billion, followed by Tata Tea Rs 1.52 billion, Pentafour Software Rs 1.5 billion, Satyam Computers Rs 921.5 million.

Other actively traded counters were Telco (Rs 804.9 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 670.6 million), Glaxo India (Rs 614.1 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 497.4 million), SBI (Rs 440.4 million), Castrol (Rs 428.3 million), MTNL (Rs 406.8 million), Reliance (Rs 296.5 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 230.7 million), Tisco (Rs 230.7 million) , Tisco (Rs 211.1 million) and Hindustan Petroleum (Rs 148.9 million).
