Selling pressure, subdued sentiment push Nifty down; 936.30

Pivotals declined further at the National Stock Exchange on selling pressure and lack of buying interest from institutional investors today.

Reflecting the subdued sentiment, the S&P CNX Nifty eased by 3.40 points to 936.30 points from 939.70 points of the previous day. The CNX Nifty Junior index also edged down by 0.10 points to 1649.70 points while the S&P CNX Defty ended lower by 2.85 points at 763.95 points. The S&P CNX 500 declined by 2.78 points to 650.01 points while the CNX Midcap 200 index finished 1.16 points lower at 575.37 points.

The total turnover, involving 66.68 million shares in 246,663 trades was Rs 20.86 billion. The debenture traded value was Rs 2.5 million.

Today, 411 securities advanced, 577 declined and 96 remained unchanged. And 54 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: Infosys Technologies which shot up by eight per cent to Rs 4951.80, Ranbaxy 4.06 per cent to Rs 333, NIIT 3.28 per cent to Rs 2230, East India Hotels 2.41 per cent to Rs 255 and M&M 2.11 per cent to Rs 181.50.

The top losers were: IPCL which declined by 4.56 per cent to Rs 72.25, Smitkline Beecham by 4.40 per cent to Rs 664.90, Great Eastern Shipping by 4.14 per cent to Rs 19.70, Tata Chemicals 3.18 per cent to Rs 71.65 and Orient Bank 3.07 per cent to Rs 33.15.
