Former defence minister K C Pant has been appointed deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, official sources said in New Delhi today.

He succeeds Jaswant Singh who has been inducted into the Union Cabinet as external affairs minister.

His wife Ila Pant is a Bharatiya Janata Party member of the Lok Sabha.

Two more members are likely to be appointed to the Planning Commission shortly, the sources said.

Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia is the sole member of the Planning Commission at present. S R Hashim is its member-secretary.

Pant was the energy minister in Indira Gandhi's cabinet in 1974 when the nuclear tests were conducted in Pokhran for the first time.
