Pune police grab Anubhav chief in Madras

After several trips to Madras, the crime branch special team from Pune Police, in a significant breakthrough, succeeded in getting the custody of Anubhav group chairman C Natesan and bringing him to Pune.

Having allegedly duped thousands of investors to the tune of over Rs 750 million countrywide, including over Rs 40 million from Pune, Natesan was picked up from his palatial residence at Chiranjeev Nagar in Madras on Saturday and brought to the city on Sunday night after securing a transit remand.

Natesan, who was produced in Pune before first class judicial magistrate yesterday, has been remanded to police custody for 14 days.

The arrest was effected by the crime branch team led by Inspector Surendra Patil, who was armed with all the necessary documentary evidence against the chairman of the group.

Natesan had floated four investment companies -- Anubhav Plantations, Anubhav Deposits, Anubhav Agro Housing Development and Dhan Vruksha -- and had roped in gullible investors to the tune of millions f rupees in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat and Maharashtra with promises of 24 per cent interest, ownership of a full-grown teak tree plus a Rs 75,000 bonus and doubling money in three-and-a-half years.

However, the group stopped paying the investors in mid-1998 and by the end of the year had locked their office in Pune and also in other states.
