Budget 2000 will continue tax reforms, hints Sinha

Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said tax reforms would continue in the next budget (for 2000-2001) scheduled to be presented in February 2000.

The 1999 bugdet had reforms for the indirect tax structure.

Addressing the Punjab, Haryana and Delhi Chambers of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi today, Sinha stressed the need for a "simplified and straightforward tax system".

During April-November 1999, total tax collections in India grew by 14.41 per cent to Rs 911.66 billion. In the same period last year, they were at Rs 796.85 billion.
