Pivotals make smart rally; Nifty recovers 18 points to 1309.90

Pivotals exhibited a smart rally at the National Stock Exchange today on heavy buying support from foreign institutional investors and local operators, encouraged by the bullish trend at the overseas stock markets.

Mirroring the uptrend, the S&P CNX Nifty opened higher at 1292.35 points, which is the low of the day, rose to 1314.15 points before closing at 1309.90 points, gaining 18.05 points or 1.39 per cent over 1291.85 points of the previous day.

The CNX Nifty Junior index also shot up by 52.55 points to 2400.05 points from 2347.50 points while the S&P CNX Defty rose by 14.75 points to 1045.40 points from 1030.65 points.

The S&P CNX 500 appreciated by 16.35 points to 932.05 points and CNX Midcap 200 gained 20.80 points to 848.75 points from 827.95 points.

The NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 21.46 billion, involving 103.93 million shares in 365,604 trades. The turnover in debentures stood at Rs 5.25 million.

About 840 securities advanced, 278 declined, 51 remained unchanged while 196 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were Reliance Petroleum which shot up by 8.07 per cent to Rs 30.80 from Rs 28.50, ACC 8.01 per cent to Rs 242.70 (224.70), Grasim 8 per cent to Rs 373.25 (345.60), BSES 7.99 per cent to Rs 183.20 (169.65) and L&T 6.38 per cent to Rs 354.25 (333).

The top losers included ICICI which declined by 3.26 per cent to Rs 80 from Rs 82.70, Reckitt Colman 2.53 per cent to Rs 429.80 (440.95), Indian Rayon 2.50 per cent to Rs 76.20 (78.15), Dr Reddy's 2.41 per cent to Rs 1151.95 (1180.45) and Ranbaxy 2.24 per cent to Rs 973.80 (996.10).

Satyam Computers registered the highest turnover of Rs 2.01 billion, followed by ACC Rs 1.36 billion, L&T Rs 1.36 billion, Digital Equipment Rs 1.25 billion, Pentadour Software Rs 1.09 billion, Ranbaxy Rs 1.08 billion and Silverline Rs 967.1 million.

The other securities which witnessed active trading were: Reliance Rs 916.9 million, HCL-HP Rs 859 million, Zee Telefilms Rs 801.6 million, Telco Rs 747.6 million, Global Telesystems Rs 553 million and SBI Rs 546.3 million.

The wholesale debt market segment of the NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 7.41 billion. Turnover in corporate debentures stood at Rs 4.76 million.
