Equities recover after weak start; Nifty up over five points, 817.35

Equities opened on a weak note, but later recovered their earlier losses, ending higher than their previous close at the National Stock Exchange today.

The S&P CNX Nifty opened at 811.85, saw a high and low of 820.35 and 804.70 and closed at 817.35, showing a net gain of 5.75 points.

The S&P Nifty Junior closed at 1411.60, gaining 15.20 points. S&P CNX Defty closed at 669.70, rising 4.70 points, S&P CNX 500 at 563.56, increasing by 1.79 points and CNX Midcap 200 closed at 501.27, adding 3.09 points.

A total of 548 scrips advanced, 316 declined and 102 were unchanged. 42 scrips hit their price bands.

ITC topped the turnover list with Rs 3.55 billion followed by Satyam Computers (Rs 2.47 billion), Zee Telefilms (Rs 1.38 billion), Reliance (Rs 1.38 billion) and SBI (Rs 1.12 billion). Others that recorded a high turnover were Pentafour, HCL-HP, Castrol, Telco and Hindalco.

The top gainers were Grasim, GE Shipping, Gujarat Ambuja, Telco and Tisco, while prominent among those that shed value were Hindalco, BSES, Cochin Refineries, Bank of India and Bajaj Auto.
