FII buying helps pivotals to firm up; Sensex surges past 3,000

The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange crossed the psychological barrier of 3000 as pivotals firmed up smartly on heavy buying support from foreign institutional investors and leading domestic institutional investors today.

The software shares which witnessed dull trend during the last couple of days on the bourses staged smart rally on FII buying support today, dealers said.

Reflecting the firm trend, the 30-scrip BSE Sensitive Index opened at 2975.78 points, surpassed the 3,000 mark and touched the day's high of 3007.66 points, fell to touch the day's low of 2972.75, before closing at 3003.25 points, showing a net gain of 33.65 points from the previous close of 2968.60 points.

The broad-based BSE-100 index advanced by 16.20 points to 1339.49 points as against the previous close of 1323.29 points.

The FIIs made purchases in SBI, Hindustan Lever and HDFC while the domestic funds bought shares of infotech, Hoechst and few others.

The FIIs made purchases worth Rs 230 million against their sales worth Rs 300 million while the domestic institutional investors made purchases worth Rs 230 million against their sales worth Rs 110 million.

Total turnover on the BOLT system reported during the day was Rs 9.34 billion.

Satyam Computer posted highest turnover of Rs 1.17 billion, followed by SBI Rs 876.7 million, ITC Rs 828.9 million, Pentafour Software Rs 698.1 million, Reliance Rs 615.2 million and Zee Telefilms Rs 615.2 million.

Other actively traded scrips were Telco (Rs 611.3 million), Tisco (Rs 206.3 million), Castrol (Rs 192.8 million), BHEL (Rs 174 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 169.4 million), ACC (Rs 150.6 million), ACC (Rs 150.6 million), Tata Tea (Rs 144.5 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 141.8 million) and Sterlite (Rs 124.9 million).
