FIIs renew buying, usher in positive sentiment; Nifty up over 11 points, 840.80

Positive sentiment continued and share prices further moved up on renewed buying interest from bull operators and foreign financial institutions on the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the uptrend, the S&P CNX Nifty Index gained by 11.65 points to 840.80 points from 829.15 points of the previous day. The CNX Nifty Junior Index edged up by 3.70 points to 1406.20 points and S&P CNX Defty rose by 9.65 points to 688.75 points.

The S&P CNX 500 index rose by 5.30 points to 574.14 points and CNX Midcap 200 index moved up by 2.58 points to 504.55 points.

The total turnover, involving 64.34 million shares, in 188,669 trades was Rs 12.95 billion and the debentures' turnover was Rs 3.38 million.

The top gainers were ICICI that rose to Rs 44.40 from 41.15, Reliance Rs 118.45 (111.25), ACC Rs 947.90 (903.85), Telco Rs 126.95 (121.35) and Reliance Capital Rs 39.75 (38.05).

Top losers were: Cochin Refineries Rs 129.50 from Rs 131, Infosys Technologies Rs 2,421.10 (2,447.35), Hindalco Rs 497.65 (501.05), Arvind Mills Rs 30.85 (31) and NIIT Rs 1,266.85 (1271.75).

The net investment by FIIs was Rs 3.4 million while domestic institutions were net sellers worth Rs 18.78 million today.

Reliance recorded the highest turnover of Rs 2.03 billion, followed by Pentafour Software (Rs 1.59 billion), Satyam Computers (Rs 1.58 billion), ITC (Rs 1.57 billion), SBI New (Rs 964 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 622 million), Telco (Rs 470.7 million), ACC (Rs 427.9 million), Castrol (Rs 294.3 million), HCL-HP (Rs 219.1 million), L&T (Rs 178 million), Tata Tea (Rs 177.2 million) and Glaxo (Rs 159.8 million).

The other actively traded securities were: Dr Reddy's (Rs 151.1 million), MTNL (Rs 138.2 million), ICICI (Rs 137.9 million), Tisco (Rs 132.3 million), BHEL (Rs 97.7 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 94.4 million), Raymond (Rs 89.4 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 83.4 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 80.2 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 77.5 million) and Hindalco (Rs 69.6 million).
