Nifty falls 17.45 points

Pivotals fell sharply on the National Stock Exchange following speculative selling pressure by market players and domestic institutional investors today.

Reflecting the weak trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 1147.65 points, touched a day's high of 1156.70 points, fell to the day's low of 1127.30 points, and finally ended at 1129.50 points, showing a net loss of 17.45 points as against the previous close of 1146.95 points.

Similarly, the Dollar NSE-50 index drifted lower by 15.05 points to 990.35 points as against the previous close of 1005.40 points. The Midcap index declined sharply by 26.85 points to 1369.00 points.

The market witnessed a turnover of Rs 14.8 billion from 69.59 million shares in 238,098 trades.

The most actively traded securities were ITC (Rs 2.7 billion), Reliance (Rs 1.3 billion), Castrol (Rs 1.2 billion), State Bank (Rs 1.1 billion), ACC (Rs 1.1 billion), Tata Tea (Rs 1 billion).

Hectic activity was noticed at the other counters led by BSES (Rs 786.1 million), L and T (Rs 443 million), TISCO (Rs 404.4 million), TELCO (Rs 3594 million), MTNL (Rs 327.8 million), Hind Lever (Rs 314 million), Glaxo (Rs 187.9 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 186.9 million), BHEL (Rs 175 million), Sterlite (Rs 146.9 million), ICICI (Rs 141.9 million), Wartdiesel (Rs 985 million), ABB (Rs 96.2 million ), Satyam Comp (Rs 93 million), BPL (Rs 81.8 million), Lakme (Rs 80.7 million), ICICI Dep LS-ML (Rs 75.9 million), Colgate (Rs 72.5 million) and NIIT (Rs 70 million).

The day's five gainers were Hindalco Rs 673.90 (663.55), Cochin Ref Rs 218.40 (215.30), Ind Hotel Rs 598.50 (590.80), Ranbaxy Rs 721.60 (718.00), EI hotel Rs 396.00 (395.45).

The top losers were Arvind Mill Rs 70.15 (73.55), Ashok Leyland Rs 42.00 (43.85), Colgate Rs 273.40 (285.05), HDFC Bank Rs 73.70 (76.50) and TELCO Rs 276.05 (286.40).
