Nifty dips by 1.55 points

Pivotals prices fluctuated widely in a volatile trading on the National Stock Exchange before posting recovery towards the end of the session, still showing marginal losses against the previous close.

Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 962.15, touched the day's high of 964.65 points, fell to the day's low of 929.95, and finally recovered to close at 961.35 points, showing a net loss of 1.55 points against the previous close of 962.90.

The NSE Defty closed lower by 0.95 points to 787.45 points against the previous close of 788.40 points. The Midcap index, however, gained moderately by 11.05 points to 1336.35 points against the previous close of 1325.30 points.

The total turnover declined to Rs 14.21 billion from Wednesday's turnover of Rs 14.88 billion, while 57.2 million changed hands in 190,514 trades. As many as 300 securities advanced, 601 declined, 81 held unchanged, while 91 securities hit their price bands today.

The top traded securities were ITC with a turnover of Rs 3.8 billion, followed by Satyam Computer Rs 2.3 billion, Reliance Rs 1.1 billion, State Bank of India Rs 990.2 million and ACC Rs 642.3 million.

Other actively traded scrips were Zee Telefilm (Rs 553.3 million), Hind Lever (Rs 453.3 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 404.8 million), Tata Tea (Rs 395.8 million), Tisco Rs 337.4 million), Telco (Rs 323.9 million), L&T (Rs 301.3 million), Castrol (Rs 236.2 million), BFL Software (Rs 214.3 million), SQRD Sfware (Rs 202.8 million), Wipro (Rs 179.8 million), Sterlite (Rs 106.7 million), MTNL (Rs 94 million), Wart Diesel (Rs 84.9 million), NIIT (Rs 84.8 million), ICICI (Rs 80 million), Corpn Bank (Rs 71.6 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 56.2 million), Rolta (Rs 54 million) and TVS Suzuki (Rs 48.8 million).

The top five gainers were Ashok Leyland Rs 40.30 (Rs 37.85), Grasim Rs 305.30 (Rs 289.90), Cochin Refin Rs 228.80 (218.35), L and T Rs 230.25 (Rs 221.15) and M and M Rs 215.45 (Rs 210.10).

The top five losers includes ACC Rs 1205.75 (1315.50), Ponds Rs 1082.35 (1150), IDBI Rs 64.65 (67.75), EIH Rs 249.75 (261.70) and Ind Rayon Rs 169.70 (176.00).
