Indian exports just 0.6% of world trade

Send this story to a friend

The government yesterday conceded that India's share of export in the international market was a mere 0.6 per cent of the global trade during the last financial year.

Replying to a question, Commerce Minister Ramakrishna Hegde told the Rajya Sabha that during 1997-98, exports were affected due to a general slowdown in world trade.

He said recession in many countries in Southeast Asia, including Japan, supply-side constraints in some sectors, slow erosion of competitiveness, and slow industrial growth effected export performance.

The minister said the government was taking necessary measures through interaction with trade, industry, and export promotion organisations.
