Panel to plan Air-India revival

The government has appointed a committee to streamline the functioning of Air-India, Civil Aviation Minister Ananth Kumar told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within a month and it is expected to come out with a revival package, Kumar said.

The minister defended the government's decision to discontinue the air service from India to South Africa by Air-India, saying it had been done due to losses. He pointed out that Air-India was operating a service from Bombay to Nairobi, and that operation was sufficient.

There was no proposal to allow private airlines or operators to start an air service from India to South Africa, he said.
