Pivotals firm up further

Pivotals firmed up further at the National Stock Exchange on continuous buying support from foreign institutional investors and domestic institutional investors on the last day of weekly settlement today.

The market opened on a positive note, moved up through the session before closing marginally higher over the previous close.

The FIIs' buy value stood smartly higher at Rs 242.4 million and sell value at Rs 184.9 million. Financial institutions/mutual funds buy and sell value stood at Rs 105.6 million and Rs 35 million respectively.

The NSE-50 or Nifty opened at 917.45 points, touched the day's high of 936.00, fell to the day's low of 917.45 before closing at 924.70 points, showing a net gain of 7.35 points against the previous close of 917.35 points. The dollar-NSE 50 or Defty closed higher by 6.00 points to 754.20 points over the previous close of 748.20 points. The Nifty junior or Midcap rallied 47.15 to 1368.25 from the last close of 1321.10.

The total turnover on the NSE rose to Rs 11.18 billion from yesterday's turnover of Rs 8.54 billion from 47.92 million shares in 1,68,125 trades. Debentures turnover was at Rs 1.23 million. 608 shares advanced and 372 fell, while 67 held steady with 43 securities hitting their price bands.

The most active scrips were ITC with a turnover of Rs 2.35 billion and State Bank of India Rs 1.73 billion and Satyam Computers Rs 954.6 million.

Other actively traded securities were Reliance (Rs 695.7 million), Castrol (Rs 496 million), L&T (Rs 355 million), ACC (Rs 337.2 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 336.7 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 272.3 million), Telco (Rs 263.9 million), Pentafour Software (Rs 258.1 million), Tisco (Rs 149.5 million), Wipro (Rs 138.8 million), BFL Software (Rs 105.1 million), Aptech (Rs 94.1 million), NIIT (Rs 86.4 million), Silver Line (Rs 84.5 million), MTNL (Rs 81.4 million), BHEL (Rs 79.5 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 55.3 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 54.7 million), Corporation Bank (Rs 54.3 million), BSES (Rs 53.1 million) and Hero Honda (Rs 52.2 million).

The top Nifty gainers were Tata Tea Rs 317 (291.40), Thermax Rs 140.25 (131.35), IPCL Rs 54.10 (51.10), Nestle Rs 398.75 (381.95), SBI Rs 216.20 (207.45).

The major losers were BPCL Rs 314.50 (323.30), India Hotels Rs 378.10 (385.10), IDBI Rs 63.10 (64.25), Tisco Rs 122 (123.55), Cochin Refineries Rs 208.35 (210.95).

The wholesale debt market today remained closed on account of id-a-milad holiday.
