Nifty drops 18.50 points

Share prices declined moderately on sustained selling pressure from financial institutions and absence of market support on the first day of current settlement cycle in the National Stock Exchange in Bombay today.

The NSE-50 index opened at 962.65 points, touched day's high of 969.70 points, low of 940.10 points, before closing at 944.80 points as compared to the previous close of 963.30 points suffering a loss of 18.50 points. The Dollar NSE-50 (Defty) finished at 844.90 points over yesterday's close of 868.25 points, losing 23.35 points.

The Midcap index closed at 1092.20 points decreased by 1 point as compared to previous close of 1093.20 points. The total turnover on the NSE was Rs 15.88 billion involving 50.7 million shares.

ITC registered highest turnover of Rs 7.3 billion followed by Castrol Rs 2 billion, Tata Tea Rs 1.3 billion, SBI-N Rs 1.1 billion, Reliance Rs 929.1 million, ACC Rs 386.9 million, Hind Lever Rs 300 million, MTNL Rs 247.8 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 219.7 million, TELCO Rs 207.8 million, TISCO Rs 174.3 million, BHEL Rs 161.8 million, L and T Rs 120.9 million, LML Rs 118.3 million, Aptech Rs 89.6 million, Corp Bank Rs 87.4 million, Infosys Tech Rs 79.2 million, Colgate Rs 77.6 million, ICICI Rs 53.3 million, M and M Rs 47.1 million, BSES Rs 44.4 million, Ingerrand Rs 39.7 million, HPCL Rs 38.1 million, IPCL Rs 33.8 million and NIIT Rs 32.4 million.

Top gainers were Cochin Refin by 3.94 per cent, Ashok Leyland by 3.19 per cent, IDBI by 2.74 per cent, MRPL by 1.36 per cent and IFCI 1.01 per cent. Losers were ABB 9.38 per cent, BHEL 7.74 per cent, ITC 5.29 per cent, EI Hotel 5.05 per cent, and M and M by 4.67 per cent.
