NSE-50 Index

Nifty rises 19.45 points

The Nifty rose as equities registered impressive gains at the National Stock Exchange today on bullish sentiments prompted by smart recovery by the Hong Kong and Tokyo stock markets and speculative buying interest by domestic buyers and foreign institutional investors.

The NSE-50 index opened at 998.30 points, witnessed a high of 1019.75 points and a low of 992.05 points. The Nifty ended at 1017.25 points as against the previous close of 997.80 points, showing a net gain of 19.45 points. The Dollar NSE-50 closed at 902.10 points from Friday's ending of 997.80 points, exhibiting an increase of 41.95 points. The Midcap index improved by 0.90 points to close at 1147.80 points.

According to brokers, the market ruled firm in early trading and closed higher on strong buying support towards the close. Fortynine securities hit their price bands.

The traded quantity was Rs 12.82 billion and the traded quantity 51.3 million.

ITC registered the highest turnover of Rs 3.5 billion followed by the State Bank of India (Rs 2.5 billion), Tata Tea (Rs 1.4 billion), Reliance (Rs 9.7 billion), Castrol (Rs 918.1 million), TELCO (Rs 432.9 million), ACC (Rs 381.7 million), HLL (Rs 302.3 million), MTNL (Rs 298.4 million), TISCO (Rs 252.9 million), Corp Bank (Rs 222.5 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 150.1 million), L&T (Rs 137.5 million), BHEL (Rs 118.1 million), BSES (Rs 110.6 million), ICICI (Rs 72.9 million), BPL (Rs 58.7 million), LML (Rs 56.9 million), Colgate (Rs 53.7 million), ICICI Bank (Rs 42.2 million), Rel Capital (Rs 32.3 million), HDFC (Rs 28 million), Dr Reddy (Rs 26 million), Rel Petro (Rs 25.7 million) and Glaxo (Rs 23.1 million).

The top gainers were BSES, ACC, HDFC, Nestle and SBI while the losers were Arvind Mills, MRPL, Hindalco, HDFC Bank and Ashok Leyland.
