NSE-50 Index

Nifty loses 7.9 points

Selling pressure for foreign institutional investors and financial turmoil had a sliding influence on the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange in Bombay today.

The NSE-50 index (Nifty) opened at 997.50 points, saw a high of 1001.30 points, a low of 975.65 points, and closed at 989.65 points as against the previous ending of 997.55 points, showing a net loss of 7.90 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 index (Defty) declined by 9.85 points to 851.20 points as compared to 861.05 points. The Midcap index closed at 1139.65 points as against the previous close of 1142.15 points, losing 2.50 points.

The prices at the bourse continued to decline till the midsession, but most of the losses were covered towards the close. Fortyfive securities hit their price bands today.

While total turnover figures were not available, ITC topped the turnover list with Rs 6.1 billion followed by Tata Tea (Rs 1.7 billion), State Bank of India (Rs 1.4 billion), Castrol (Rs 906.1 million), TELCO (Rs 789.4 million), MTNL (Rs 785.8 million), Reliance (Rs 766.5 million), BHEL (Rs 344.4 million), HLL (Rs 263.8 million), TISCO (Rs 242.2 million), L and T (Rs 226.3 million), ACC (Rs 206.5 million), Bajaj (Rs 181.5 million), BPL (Rs 79.6 million), Corp Bank (Rs 63.4 million), Colgate (Rs 46 million), Ramcond (Rs 44.4 million), EIH (Rs 43.5 million), ICICI (Rs 42.2 million), Tata Unisys (Rs 31.1 million), HPCL (Rs 29.3 million), Ingersand (Rs 26.5 million), BSES (Rs 2.65 million), Guj Ambuja (Rs 24.9 million) and Raasi Cement (Rs 24.6 million).

The top gainers were IDBI, Castrol, SBI, Tata Tea and ITC which improved by 4.45, 2.43, 1.48, 1.46 and 1.11 per cent respectively. The losers were BHEL, Guj Ambuja, M&M, MTNL and TELCO which declined by 7.61, 6.91, 6.59, 5.49 and 4.67 per cent.
