NSE-50 Index

NSE recovers marginally

Speculative buying support and favourable advices from markets in south-east and east Asia supported the Nifty to stage a marginal recovery at the National Stock Exchange. Seventyfour securities hit their price bands at NSE on Tuesday.

The NSE-50 index opened at 995.70 points as compared to the previous close of 995.80 points. It saw a high of 1,016.80 points and a low of 995.70, and closed at 999.10 showing a net gain of 3.30 points.

The dollar NSE-50 rose by 1.35 points to close at 867.80 points as compared to the last day's 866.45.

The midcap index closed at 1130.75 points against the previous day's 1129 points, exhibiting a gain of 1.75 points.

The total traded value was 14.03 billion, the traded quantity 58.7 million and the number of trades 1,84,356.

ITC registered the highest turnover of Rs 5.54 billion. It was followed by Tata Tea (Rs 1.86 billion), SBI (1.19 billion), Reliance (Rs 966.5 billion), Castrol (Rs 513.5 billion) and MTNL (Rs 438.7 million).

Hectic activity was observed at HLL (Rs 399.3 million), Tisco (Rs 290.6 million), L&T (Rs 249.7 million), Telco (Rs 229 million), Glaxo (Rs 193.8 million), BPL (Rs 184.7 million), Corpbank (Rs 177.1 million), ACC (Rs 172.7 million), BHEL (Rs 115.9 million), Colgate (Rs 83.6 millioin), ICICI (Rs 69.4 million), Infosys (Rs 49.4 million), Relpetro (Rs 47.6 million), Ingersand (Rs 46.5 million), IPCL (Rs 44.8 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 39 million), EIH (Rs 38.5 million)) and Relcapital (Rs 38.5 million).

The top gainers were MTNL, Thermax, SBI, Cochinref and ITC which rose by 3.12, 3.08, 2.46, 2.25 and 1.96 per cent respectively.

The losers were Glaxo, HLL, IDBI, Arvind Mills and Ponds which declined by 3.04, 2.88, 2.76, 2.02 and 1.97 per cent respectively.
