Nifty gains 21.95 points

The first day of current settlement on the National Stock Exchange witnessed brisk activity which was characterised by higher volumes and firm sentiment.

The NSE-50 index opened at 1014.10 points, touched the day's high of 1037.15 points, low of 1014.10 points, and closed at 1036.05 points, showing a net gain of 21.95 points as against the previous close of 1014.10 points.

The dollar NSE-50 (Defty) index finished at 914.90 points over the last trading day's close of 895.50 points gaining 19.40 points. The Midcap index settled down at 1179.95 points as compared to yesterday's close of 1131.75 points gaining by 48.20 points.

The total turnover on the exchange was Rs 12.6 billion, involving 55.3 million shares in 175,526 trades. The exchange also witnessed 122 securities hit their price bands today.

The major gainers were MRPL improved by Rs 1.55 to Rs 17.85, Cochin Refin by Rs 15.55 to Rs 182.15, IPCL by Rs 3.30 to Rs 58, Rel Petro by Rs 1.30 to Rs 24.7 and TELCO by Rs 12.5 to Rs 246.40. The major loser was MTNL by Re 0.55 to Rs 253.45.

Hectic trading was observed at ITC (Rs 3.6 billion ), Tata Tea (Rs 1.4 billion), LML (Rs 936.3 million), Reliance (Rs 936.3 million), Castrol (Rs 791.6 million), SBI-N (Rs 731.6 million), Hind Lever (Rs 512 million), TELCO (Rs 433 million), L and T (Rs 252.4 million), ACC (Rs 242.7 million), MTNL (Rs 204.9 million), TISCO (Rs 169.4 million ), Corp Bank (Rs 137 million), NIIT (Rs 121.2 million), BHEL (Rs 116.9 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 114.4 million), Lakme (Rs 108.4 million), Glaxo (Rs 90.8 million ), Ponds (Rs 73 million), BPL (Rs 71.9 million), Pentsfware (Rs 63.2 million), Satyam Comp (Rs 62.1 million), ICICI (Rs 50.8 million), BSES (Rs 49.2 million) and Rel Petro (Rs 47.8 million).
