Nifty loses 7.3 points

Pivotals registered early gains, but lost ground towards the end of the trading session on the National Stock Exchange today following speculative selling pressure.

Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 "Nifty" index opened at 975.90 points, touched the day's high of 988.40 points, then fell sharply to touch the day's low of 964.45, and finally ended at 967.95 points, showing a net loss of 7.30 points as against the previous close of 975.25 points.

Similarly, the Dollar NSE-50 "Defty" closed lower by 5.45 points to 866.40 points as against the previous close of 871.85 points, while the Midcap index drifted lower by 8.35 points to 1092.25 points over the previous close of 1100.60 points.

The total turnover reported during the day was Rs 15.2 billion. ITC continued at the top in term of business volume and registered highest turnover of Rs 5.6 billion, followed by Tata Tea Rs 1.6 billion, Castrol Rs 1.3 billion, State Bank Rs 1.2 billion and TELCO Rs 1 billion.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like Reliance Rs 859.1 million, Hind Lever Rs 749.1 million, MTNL Rs 290.7 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 283.5 million, L and T Rs 245.9 million, TISCO Rs 167.4 million, LML Rs 153.7 million, BHEL Rs 127.7 million, Ponds Rs 100.9 million, ICICI Rs 95.4 million, Corp Bank Rs 90.9 million, Infosys Tech Rs 66.6 million, Glaxo Rs 65.3 million, Colgate Rs 58.7 million, BPL Rs 58.4 million, Nestle Rs 53.7 million, BSES Rs 42.4 million, Punjab Tract Rs 42.3 million and ICICI Bank Rs 39.7 million.

Among the top gainers, BPCL firmed up by 3.09 per cent to Rs 350, Hind Lever increased by 1.79 per cent to Rs 1395.50, Castrol gained by 1.78 per cent to Rs 674.20, ponds up by 1.51 per cent to Rs 918.85, TELCO gained by 1.33 per cent to Rs 225.45.

Among the losers, EIH lost by 9.99 per cent to Rs 289.15, ABB declined by 9.80 per cent to Rs 378.20, Guj Amb Cem dropped by 6 per cent to Rs 216.25, Glaxo moved down by 4.27 per cent to Rs 369.20 and MTNL down by 3.65 per cent to Rs 227.30.
