NSE-50 Index

NSE gains 13.15 points

Share prices firmed up further on the National Stock Exchange following good buying support from speculators and domestic institutional investors today.

Reflecting the firm trend, the NSE-50 (Nifty) index opened at 963.45, touched the day's high of 978.05 points declined to the day's low of 962.25 points and later closed at 976.60 points, showing a net gain of 13.15 points over the previous close of 963.45 points.

Similarly, the Dollar NSE-50 (Defty) index gained by 9.15 points to 870.10 over the previous close of 860.95 points, while the Midcap index improved by 6.60 points to 1112.90 points as against the previous close of 1106.30 points.

The total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 1193.95 million.

Tobacco giant ITC topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 3.9 billion, followed by Tata Tea Rs 2.2 billion, Castrol Rs 1 billion, State Bank of India Rs 863.4 million and Reliance Rs 753.9 million.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like MTNL Rs 344.9 million, Hind Lever Rs 328.7 million, TELCO Rs 293.8 million, ACC Rs 255.9 million, HDFC Rs 182.9 million, LML Rs 161.3 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 150.4 million, Corp Bank Rs 132.8 million, TISCO Rs 124.1 million, L and T Rs 112.8 million, Ranbaxy Rs 108.2 million, BHEL Rs 101.4 million, NIIT Rs 56.4 million, BSES Rs 55.5 million, ICICI Rs 45.7 million, Glaxo Rs 43.7 million, Inger Rand Rs 39.1 million, Punjab Trac Rs 36.6 million, IPCL Rs 25.5 million, and Guj Ambuja Cem Rs 25.2 million.

Guj Ambuja Cement gained by 64.9 per cent to Rs 233.70, Hindalco up by 5.12 per cent to Rs 628.80, Glaxo closed higher by 4.13 per cent to Rs 358.32 , HPCL up by 3.82 per cent to Rs 408.60 and MTNL firmed up by 3.16 per cent to Rs 232.05.

EI Hotel, Ashok Leyland, TELCO, MRPL and Mahindra and Mahindra were the major losers of the day.
