Rupee eases a little in dull trading; down two paise, Rs 42.53/54

The rupee eased slightly in a dull trading session at the interbank foreign exchange market today.

The Indian unit opened weaker at Rs 42.53/54. It rose to Rs 42.52 on some dollar selling by a few banks. It finally ended at the morning levels of Rs 42.53/54, but shed two paise compared to the previous closing.

The monthly premia quoted lower with the forward premia (in paise) ending at 12-15 for January, 32-35 for February, 57-60 for March, 87-90 for April, 117-120 for May, 146-149 for June and 177-180 for July.

The six-month annualised premia ended at 7.25 per cent. Cash/spot ended higher at 2.75-3.00 paise.

Tomorrow/spot closed at 2.00-2.25 paise, while cash/tomorrow finished at 0.50-0.75 paise. The US dollar was lower against the yen in early trading at the Tokyo forex market amid the annual year-end trading lull.

The dollar bought 115.28 yen at mid-day, down 0.64 yen from late Monday in Tokyo and also below its late New York level of 115.90 yen overnight.

Back home, the Reserve Bank of India fixed the reference rate at Rs 42.53 per dollar as against the previous fix of Rs 42.52. The rupee ended at Rs 71.34 against pound sterling, Rs 36.86 against the yen and Rs 25.40 against the dollar.
