BJP chief urges MPs to back insurance bill

The Bharatiya Janata Party today tried to put up a united stand on the Insurance Regulatory Authority Bill which provides for opening of insurance sector to private parties with foreign equity participation.

However, party president Kushabhau Thakre reiterated that prior consultations between the government and the party would have prevented unnecessary speculation in the media and political circles.

In a statement, Thakre said the Cabinet had taken a unanimous decision on the issue and it is therefore necessary that all members of Parliament belonging to the BJP and its allies fully back the bill when it is introduced and ensure its successful passage.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana said as of today the bill will be introduced in its original form this week.

Consultations with all political parties, including allies, were going on to reach consensus on the bill. Parleys with the Congress were over, he added.

Party vice president Krishan Lal Sharma denied that there were any differences between the party and the government on the issue. The party would back all the decisions taken by the Union Cabinet, he added.
