Select scrips rise; Nifty too, 859.80

Share prices moved in a narrow band with select securities rising on the National Stock Exchange in Bombay today.

The S&P CNX Nifty finished at 859.80 points as against the previous close of 855.45 points showing a net gain of 4.35 points.

CNX Nifty closed at 1499.05 points over the last close of 1480.15 points, gaining 18.9 points. S&P CNX Defty settled at 701.7 points as compared to earlier close of 696.25 points.

S&P CNX 500 eased to 591.62 points from 588.96 points and CNX Midcap 200 closed at 525.25 points over the previous close of 521.12 points.

The traded value was Rs 9.75 billion comprising 40.08 million shares in 148,273 trades. The debentures' value was Rs 2.80 million.

About 38 securities have hit their price bands. There were 432 were advance, 465 declines and 87 remained unchanged.

The foreign institutional investors sold shares worth of Rs 155.83 million and bought shares worth Rs 97.12 million. On the contrary, Indian financial institutions and mutual funds invested Rs 190.49 million and sold shares worth Rs 32.33 million.

ITC registred highest turnover of Rs 2.54 billion followed by Satyam Computers Rs 1.40 billion, SBI Rs 707.4 million, Reliance Rs 696.2 million, Pentafour Software Rs 620.2 million, Zee Telefilms Rs Rs 500.9 million, ACC Rs 252.5 million, Tata Tea Rs 208.7 million, Hindustan Lever Rs 182.3 million, Telco Rs 136.2 million, Rolta Rs 136.2 million, BHEL Rs 132.3 million, Infosys Tech Rs 104.4 million, L&T Rs 97.1 million, HCL-HP Rs 84.6 million, MTNL Rs 83.3 million, Castrol Rs 78 million, Tisco Rs 76.2 million, Silverline Rs 74.5 million, Colgate Rs 71 million, Dr Reddy's Rs 68.3 million, Square D Software Rs 68.2 million, Glaxo Rs 62.5 million, Reckitt & Colman Rs 60.2 million and BFL Software Rs 58.1 million.

The depository traded value was Rs 2.1 million, traded quantity of Rs 18,000 on 99 trades.

The top gainers were ABB 453.55 (433.95), MTNL 189.30 (183.85), Hindustan Petro 261.15 (254.20), BHEL 226.15 (221.55) and TVS Suzuki 446.75 (437.80) while the losers were Hindalco 473.45 (492.40), Grasim 180.35 (185.95), Telco 137.40 (140.30), M&M 151.30 (154.45) and ICICI 70.05 (71.35).

The wholesale debt market of NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 2.23 billion. The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 550 million at a weighted yield of 11.64 per cent. The certificate of deposit issued by IFCI maturing on April 19, 1999 was traded for Rs 160 million at a weighted yield of Rs 13.33 per cent repo trades worth Rs 1.02 billion were traded at repo rates of Rs 8.25 per cent for the current fortnight and 14.50-15.00 per cent for the next fortnight.
