Rediff on the Net Launches Path Breaking Online Shopping Service
Mumbai, August 13, 1998


Rediff On The Net (www.rediff.com), India’s leading on-line service, has once again taken a pioneering step in setting up India’s first true E-Commerce service, which will give Indian consumers the opportunity to shop from their desktops and pay online using credit cards. Items ordered will be home delivered. This service is available to consumers the world over.

Surfers will now have the opportunity to choose from over 40,000 music titles and a 100,000 book titles to order online with discounts upto 40%. Further, Rediff On The Net, also offers its surfers a chance to make bookings in over a 180 carefully chosen hi-quality reasonably priced hotels in India!

Apart from being able to browse, search and place online orders and make payments online, the site also offers extensive reviews of books and music being offered. Further, it provides a special feature, where users can add their own reviews to share their experience with other users.

The service is based on hi-end Intel Architecture based on the Pentium â II Processor Netfinity Server and IBM Net.Commerce software, which is a part of IBM's comprehensive business offering and package shipping by FedEx, the world leaders in express transportation and online tracking.

Commenting on the launch of E-Commerce, Mr. Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman, Rediff On The Net, said, "The launch of online shopping is yet another step to ensure that the Indian consumer gets a truly world class online experience."

Further, Rediff On The Net, also announced a simultaneous launch of two free services to make the Internet a more enjoyable and useful experience:

Rediffmail, a free e-mail service, which once created by users, can be read, written and accessed from any PC at home, work, cybercafes etc. This mail service has all the features of the world-wide popular mail services like Hotmail, Yahoomail and other such services.

Rediff Personal Homepages, a free and easy to use homepage creation service, that allows one to make their personal homepages without any technical assistance. This would help people to share their opinions, passions and beliefs with other like minded individuals world-wide.
